I plan on using the grant money and airline gift card to bring urban youth students to a national park to have them experience the great outdoors, educate them on wilderness skills such as knot tying, educate them about environmental sustainable living, and to become young fit and well individuals. To measure my plans success is to be looking down the road when these young individuals have taken in the experience they have gained from going to hiking and or camping trips into their adulthood and will help teach their own sons and daughter helping move on the knowledge and healthy ideas for a better tomorrow. And all of this comes from going into the wilderness, together!

What would I do with $1000? That is very easy, I would purchase field equipment for the club to use at meeting and on outings such as binoculars, nets, magnifiers, field journals, etc. We would also be able to buy supplies needed for meetings such as owl pellets to dissect and insects to raise. $1000 could go a very long way in creating a new generation of people who enjoy and care for nature. As for the $500 airfare, honestly I am stumped by this part. I have thought and thought and honestly am not sure what to do with it other then possible auction it off in order to raise more funds for the club.

I will pilot test the project with a local school and public lands agency in northern Minnesota. The grant money will go towards transportation for the children, healthy snacks, souvenir outdoor gear like water bottles, and a digital camera so they can take photos of their outdoor experiences and present back to their community! I would love to organize a community event at the end of the field week where students can present to their community about how they interpret their archaeological heritage and local landscapes, and how great it is to do classwork in nature! It would be fantastic to be able to fly to another National Forest or National Park where people are willing to try out this program - like the Olympic National Park and Olympic National Forest!

We would like to use this grant money to provide transportation, camping equipment, and food to families who may not have the resources to get out and explore the Shawnee National Forest and southern Illinois. In order to record our results, we will have a before and after survey to gauge families comfort level in the woods. As an incentive to participate in our event and complete our survey, we will use the $500 airline gift card as a prize drawing to give to one of the families.

We will organize an orienteering event that will bring students, parents and relatives, teachers, and community members together to explore and engage in the outdoors, work as a team, develop skills, and have fun. The benefits of orienteering include enjoying nature and spending quality time as a family, physical activity, building decision making skills through team work, and developing map and compass. We plan to use the $1000 to execute the event. We will purchase compasses, print maps, orange and white flags for the course, stickers to track course success, as well as fliers and posters to promote the event. We will confer with local experts on how to successfully hold an orienteering event for elementary-school-aged children. We will also need to rent buses to transport students, their families and their neighbors to the forest where the event will be held. We plan to use the $500 airline gift card as a prize for the winning team. We think this will greatly enhance participation.

If there were any funds left over, we would purchase a wildlife camera to track the wildlife.

The grant would be a great way to promote the walks on the BeltLine and encourage folks to get outside and explore their surroundings. My idea is to give out t-shirts when people complete segments of the BeltLine walks to help promote the walks and the exploration that can happen right in our own city. I would also use the grant money to create printed material that would be given out so that people that come out on the walks would have information that they could then share with others, hopefully others that they chose to then share the walking routes with, on future walks. There is such a need for information about how to use our cities. People don't have to get into a car and drive off to the mountains or far away remote places to discover nature and get out into the outdoors. It can be done right from our doorsteps, in our cities, urban exploring the underused and forgotten sections of our cities. I would love to opportunity to promote more walking around Atlanta.

My passion is not reliant on this grant. It is something I have chosen as a career path, and is in the beginning stages. I have little capital saved up but what I have is my own hard earned cash. I would use this grant to help organize the logistics of getting many teams (already have people signing up) of people outdoors for sometimes months at a time. All the while each team would be raising money for charities all over the world. These rallies will show off the more wild side of our planet and get people excited to conserve it for future generations, as well as help those that struggle for day to day life. There will checkpoints along each route as well as parties at the beginning and the end of each run. This is an opportunity to create a self-feeding cycle of people helping wilderness and others, all the while exploring our planet in the greener ways of our fore-fathers.

The demand for our programming is much higher than our current level of resources. Winning this $1,000 grant and $500 airline gift card would enable us to continue to expand the numbers of youth that we are able to enroll in our program and through this, expand the numbers of urban youth who are able to experience the wonders of our nation's forests and wilderness areas. We greatly appreciate your support and couldn't do this work without our larger community of supporters - thank you!
